You've probably never even been aware of your round ligament until being pregnant. The ligament, which supports the uterus, stretches when you are pregnant, sometimes causing pain and discomfort, the American Pregnancy Association reports. Round ligament pain often occurs when you rise to standing from either sitting or lying down or when you suddenly change your position. The condition is not serious, but it can be bothersome. Before trying stretches to relieve the discomfort, speak with your obstetrician to ensure what you feel is actually round ligament pain.
Step 1
Position yourself on the floor so your hands and knees are firmly planted, the American Pregnancy Association suggests.
Step 2
Lower only your head so it touches the floor.
Step 3
Keep your butt in its original position.
Step 4
Hold the position for about 5 to 10 seconds before returning to your original position.
Step 5
Repeat the stretch as the pain occurs or as advised by your doctor.
Tips and Warnings
- You can help prevent round ligament pain by slowly changing your position and gradually standing up after you have been lying down or sitting, BabyCenter advises. Laughing, sneezing or coughing can also worsen the pain. To avoid it, try bending at the hips before engaging in these activities if possible.
- The American Pregnancy Association advises you to always contact your medical practitioner if you experience pain along with vaginal bleeding, changes in vaginal discharge, nausea, vomiting, chills, fever or cramping.
