Sinus pain and congestion are generally caused by some sort of infection--either fungal, viral or bacterial--and the condition is known as sinusitis. This infection causes inflammation of the sinuses, which are cavities in the face. The resulting mucus buildup leads to pressure, pain and nasal congestion--but there are plenty of things you can do to treat a sinus infection and alleviate your pain.
Step 1
Flush out the mucus. According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, drinking lots of fluids will help to break up sinus congestion and alleviate pain while thinning out the mucus. Be sure to drink plenty of water while you're sick to alleviate symptoms.
Step 2
Apply a warm compress to the face. Sinus pain and congestion can cause significant pressure in the face. To make yourself feel better, the NLM suggests soaking a washcloth or rag in warm water and holding it across your face. Try doing this a few times each day for better relief--if a cold compress feels better, try applying an ice pack to the sinus area.
Step 3
Breathe in moisture. You can run a humidifier or take a steamy shower--just breathe in that moist air to help alleviate sinus pain and congestion, says the NLM. You can also try using a nasal spray of saline solution a few times daily.
Step 4
Take an over-the-counter pain reliever. If your sinus congestion causes significant pain, an over-the-counter analgesic (ibuprofen, acetaminophen or naproxen) can provide pain relief. For children, stick to acetaminophen or ibuprofen pain relievers.
