The standard American diet includes refined flours, which are processed and stripped of fiber and nutrients. This clogs the colon and increases the need for eating foods that assist with colon cleaning. Dietary fiber, especially insoluble fiber is helpful in cleaning your intestines and preventing colon cancer, according to the American Dietetic Association. Besides food, water is an important element that is often overlooked when considering a healthy and clean digestive system.

Wheatgrass

Ann Wigmore, a wheatgrass and nutrition expert and author, created an institute devoted to teaching people how to cleanse their bodies with raw foods. One of the highlights of her expertise is how to cleanse the colon with wheatgrass juice. Wheatgrass is natural and highly nutritious and contains vitamins A, B-complex, C, E, and K and 17 amino acids. You can buy indoor growing kits with seeds and a planter that fits on your kitchen counter, or you can find it freshly squeezed at certain health food stores.

Flaxseed

Ground flaxseed is full of fiber, omega-3 fatty acids and lignans, all of which are very healthy in cleaning your colon, reducing inflammation and preventing cancer, according to the American Dietetic Association. If you eat enough flaxseed meal, it acts as a laxative, which may be effective as a colon cleanse. You can find it in the baking section of most grocery stores. It adds a nutty flavor to yogurts, cereals and smoothies.

Whole Grains

Whole grains, especially whole-wheat flour and wheat bran are a food that is rich in insoluble fiber, which assists your digestive system in moving waste through your intestines and increases stool bulk. Simple carbohydrates from white, refined flour forms a gooey substance that sticks to your intestinal walls, which makes it harder for your body to eliminate.
