Grey tea, or more commonly known as Earl Grey tea, is a widely sipped brew in the United Kingdom. Tales are told of the tea's namesake, an Earl named Lord Charles Grey who lived in the 1800s. Over the years the stories of the tea's beginnings have changed along with its flavors -- its is now available in both green and black varieties -- although its numerous health benefits remain.

Antioxidant Protection

The antioxidant content in Earl Grey tea makes it a superior beverage and health tonic. Antioxidants help boost the immune system by protecting the body and counteracting the damage done by free radicals, which can promote aging, disease and illness. In addition, black tea leaves, such as those used to make Earl Grey Tea, have been used to treat headaches and low blood pressure, prevent health complications such as heart disease and kidney stones and reduce the risk of certain types of cancer, according to MedlinePlus.

Weight Loss

With the mutitudes of weight loss products on pharmacy shelves, it's tough to decide which ones are effective and healthy. Earl Grey tea is a calorie-free beverage with the potential to promote weight loss due to the thermogenic effects, which are attributed to its caffeine content. Although the results are modest, sipping the brew may help overweight people improve their health by shedding excess weight. Consuming too much, however, can cause sleep difficulties, headache, nervousness and heart palpitations. Fewer than five cups daily is a safe amount for most adults, according to MedlinePlus.

Strengthens Teeth

The fluoride that is naturally present in Earl Grey tea helps protect against tooth decay and resulting pain. Second only to the common cold, tooth decay is one of the most common disorders that often affects children and young adults, although anyone can get tooth decay, according to MedlinePlus.
