AmLactin Moisturizing Body Lotion is specially formulated with a mild acid to have a pH in the 4.5 to 5.5 range. It is designed to soften, exfoliate and moisturize the skin. For best results, apply twice per day. It may cause stinging when applied, and a mild rash or irritation may occur with initial use.

Water

Water is the first ingredient listed and is a common ingredient in personal care products. It is generally used as a solvent.

Mild Acid

AmLactin Moisturizing Body Lotion is made with 12 percent lactic acid. Lactic acid is a naturally occurring acid that preserves the moisture content of skin. It makes rough skin softer and more pliable. The lactic acid in AmLactin is neutralized with ammonium hydroxide. Ammonium hydroxide is ammonia dissolved in water and is used as a pH adjuster.

Skin-Conditioning Ingredients

AmLactin contains several skin-conditioning ingredients. Light mineral oil is the first listed. Mineral oil acts as a lubricant on the skin to give it a soft even appearance. It is distilled from petroleum for use in personal care products. Glyceryl stearate is another lubricant added to AmLactin. According to CosmeticsInfo.org, it is formed from glycerin and stearic acid, both found naturally in animal and vegetable fats. AmLactin also contains polyethylene glycol-100 stearate, or PEG-100 Stearate, which is typically used as an emollient to soften and smooth the skin. It is also used in shampoos and such to help water mix with dirt and oil to be washed away. The Environmental Working Group's SKIN DEEP Cosmetic Safety Database advises caution in use of products containing this PEG, given the animal research that demonstrates adverse health effects associated with exposure to them.

Organic Alcohols

Propylene glycol is obtained from natural gas and is one of the most widely used ingredients in cosmetics. In lotions, it restores suppleness to the skin by acting as a moisturizer. Glycerine is a sugar alcohol used in AmLactin as a humectant that draws moisture from the air.

Emulsifying Agents

Laureth-4 and polyoxyl 40 stearate are added to AmLactin as emulsifiers. Emulsifiers are used to help ingredients that normally do not blend together to dissolve in one another. Cetyl alcohol is also listed. It is a fatty alcohol often used to keep emulsified ingredients from separating into their components.

Filler

AmLactin Moisturizing Body Lotion contains magnesium aluminum silicate, a naturally occurring mineral derived from clay. It is commonly used as a thickener or filler in cosmetic products. According to Truthinaging.com, magnesium aluminum silicate is composed of large molecules and unable to be absorbed by the skin.

Preservatives

Methylparaben and propylparaben are preservatives used to prevent bacterial and fungal growth in AmLactin.
