Alfalfa, a type of perennial plant that grows two to four feet high with flowers that may be purple, white or green, is used in many parts of the world to treat a variety of health conditions. Alfalfa and its possible benefits have not been studied thoroughly so scientific proof of its effectiveness is not available. Consult with a doctor knowledgeable about herbal remedies before taking alfalfa for any medical condition. It should not to be considered a substitute for prescription medication and may interact with other medications you are already taking.

Cholesterol

According to Medline Plus, alfalfa supplements may be effective at lowering LDL, or low-density lipoprotein which is the bad type of cholesterol. Proponents believe that alfalfa does this by decreasing the amount of cholesterol that is absorbed in the digestive tract.

Digestive Issues

Alfalfa has been used historically as a treatment for digestive ailments. Chinese physicians reportedly used the leaves as a treatment for digestive disturbances and Indian physicians used both the leaves and flowers to aid in digestion. Research studies have not been done to verify claims that alfalfa helps in these circumstances. Regardless, it is still taken and believed by many to benefit the stomach and intestines.

Anemia

Alfalfa has been noted as a possible treatment for anemia along with several other herbs. The University of Maryland Medical Center explains that alfalfa is used to both cleanse and fortify the blood thus possibly increasing the hemoglobin levels. Alfalfa is not considered standard treatment for anemia. If you suspect anemia, consult a doctor for diagnosis and treatment advice.

Possible Benefits

Alfalfa is also used to treat a host of other diseases and health conditions. Scientific evidence does not back these claims although some individuals have reported improvements when taking alfalfa. Conditions thought to benefit from alfalfa include kidney and bladder disorders, prostate problems, asthma, menopause, poor appetite, arthritis and diabetes. Additionally, some believe that alfalfa may increase the milk supply in nursing mothers. If you have any of these conditions, consult with your physician.
