Omega-3 fatty acid vitamins are derived from fish oils, most commonly mackerel, herring, tuna, halibut, salmon, cod liver, whale blubber or seal blubber, states MedlinePlus of the National Institutes of Health. Omega-3 vitamins are most commonly taken to lower triglycerides and prevent heart disease and stroke, states MayoClinic.com. The best omega-3 vitamins are made from fresh fish oil and are effective when taken regularly.

Lovaza

Lovaza is an omega-3 ethyl ester that is commonly prescribed to lower triglycerides and improve the cardiovascular system. This medication should be taken twice per day at the same time, at a dose that your doctor recommends. You should take this medication with a full glass of water to ease swallowing the pill. You may chew the pill if you have difficulty swallowing the pill whole. Common side effects associated with Lovaza include burping, nausea, heartburn, back pain and a change in the sense of taste in the mouth, states PubMed Health. Lovaza is the only FDA-approved prescription omega-3 available.

Vitamin World Omega-3 Vitamin

Omega-3 vitamins are also available over the counter. Vitamin World sells their own version of omega-3, which they state contains purified and concentrated fish oils from deep sea, cold-water fish. Furthermore, this supplement contains no heavy metals and is reasonably priced. Vitamin World omega-3 acids are one of the best options for over-the-counter supplementation.

NutraSanus Omega-3

NutraSanus is another vitamin store that produces a competitive version of omega-3 supplementation. NutraSanus markets an enteric-coated form of the omega-3 vitamin, which reduces stomach discomfort and the fish odor associated with taking fish oils. Furthermore, this version is slightly more expensive than non-enteric-coated forms, but still affordable. Consider the NutraSanus version if you experience stomach discomfort, or an abnormal taste after taking vitamin supplements.
