Iron is a necessary mineral in maintaining healthy levels of red blood cells, states Medline Plus. Red blood cells carry oxygen to the tissues so they can create energy to function. When you become iron deficient, red blood cells are reduced in number and size, which results in a deficiency of oxygen delivery to the tissues. Finding the proper supplement is necessary to maintain healthy blood oxygen levels.

Multivitamin

Many multivitamins are available on the market. When replacing iron, you want to choose a multivitamin that contains more iron than a regular multivitamin. Centrum Women's is a recommended over-the-counter supplement that contains 100 percent of the daily value of iron. Getting your supplemental iron through a multivitamin is appropriate if you do not have a deficiency. If you are iron deficient, the amount of iron in most multivitamins may not be enough.

Feosol

Feosol, or ferrous sulfate, is an iron supplement that is commonly prescribed to improved red blood cell production and increase the oxygen content in the blood. Drugs.com states that Feosol should be taken 1 to 2 hours after a meal. You should also be aware of constipation, dark stools and gastrointestinal discomfort as possible side effects.

Fergon

Fergon, or ferrous gluconate, is also an iron supplement that is prescribed to improve blood counts. After taking Fergon regularly, you should notice an improvement of energy and concentration. Like most other iron supplement, Fergon may cause constipation, gastrointestinal discomfort and nausea.
