Buttoning your shirts or fastening your jeans can be frustrating when you carry extra weight around your waist. It is not possible to lose fat from only your waistline, but you can decrease your overall body fat percentage to flatten your stomach. Following a specialized workout program can increase metabolism to melt body fat. Combining exercise with healthy lifestyle changes will help trim inches off your waist fast.

Step 1

Perform resistance training workouts three days per week to build muscle, which boosts metabolism. Train each muscle group during every workout. Include multi-joint exercises that stimulate multiple muscle groups. These include smith squats, push-ups, barbell shoulder presses and tricep dips. Perform each exercise for three sets of 15 repetitions.

Step 2

Train your abdominal muscles twice per week to develop muscle and tone the midsection. Perform exercises that stimulate every angle of the abdominals and core. Do stability ball crunches, oblique crunches, leg raises, stability ball knee tucks and V-ups for four sets of 25 repetitions.

Step 3

Do 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise after strength training three days per week. Walk on the treadmill with a high incline or perform intervals, jog for two minutes and walk for two minutes.

Step 4

Adopt healthy eating habits. Clean out your kitchen and toss out any processed foods like potato chips, canned foods and frozen dinners. Eat foods in their natural form, such as fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meats, and whole grains, like brown rice and fiber-rich cereal.

Step 5

Decrease your dairy intake. Consuming dairy can cause tummy bloating because the sugars in milk are difficult for the body to digest, notes the "New York Times."

Step 6

Drink more water to decrease belly bloat caused by water retention. Carry a bottle of water with you to stay hydrated throughout the day. Drink at least eight cups of water per day.
