There are many weight-loss drugs and supplements available to choose from online and at drugstores and health food stores. Over-the-counter (OTC) dietary supplements and weight-loss aids are by and large not subject to rigorous Food and Drug Administration (FDA) standards. Because the FDA can only take action on a drug once it has sufficient evidence to support a safety ban or recall, it is important to do your homework and consult with a physician before buying and taking a weight-loss drug.
Alli
Alli is the OTC, reduced-strength version of orlistat, a prescription drug for obese people. Prescription and OTC sources of orlistat are the only weight-loss medications approved by the FDA and should be taken while following a low-calorie diet and an exercise program. According to the MayoClinic.com, you can lose weight with Alli because the product decreases your intestine's ability to absorb fat, which causes any undigested excess to leave the body via bowel movements. The FDA has studied a possible link between Alli and liver injury since 2009; however, they have yet to report anything conclusive. Nevertheless, you should contact your doctor if you experience any liver-related symptoms, which can include jaundice, brown urine, weakness, fatigue or jaundice.
Chromium
Chromium is a weight loss supplement sold as a single-ingredient supplement and in combination formulas under names like chromium chloride, chromium nicotinate, chromium picolinate, high-chromium yeast and chromium citrate. According to the National Institutes of Health's Office of Dietary Supplements, chromium seems to be involved in the metabolism of carbohydrates, fat and protein, although more research is necessary to make official weight loss and increased muscle mass claims. Supplement doses range from 50 to 200 mcg, and few serious side effects have been linked to high intake of chromium supplements, which is why a Mayo Clinic review considers it fairly safe.
Guarana
Made from the seeds of a plant native to South America, guarana is an over-the-counter weight-loss supplement with more caffeine than coffee beans. An ingredient in energy drinks for some time, guarana can now be found in powder or tablet form as a weight-loss aid. According to Diet Choices, guarana works as an appetite suppressant and speeds up your metabolism. Drugs.com advises that you should consult your doctor if you have heart problems, high blood pressure, kidney disease, an overactive thyroid or an anxiety disorder before taking guarana. If you are sensitive to caffeine you may have difficulty taking guarana as well.
