Bikram yoga, sometimes referred to as hot yoga, is done in a heated room to allow for maximum flexibility and to release toxins through sweating. Temperatures vary between 90 to 105 degrees F. Developed by Bikram Choudhury, it is based upon Hatha yoga. Comprised of 26 poses or postures, it works all parts of the of the body- organs, ligaments, muscles and veins to achieve optimal functioning.

About Cystic Acne

Blockages in conjunction with inflammation inside the deep hair follicle produce lumps or cysts beneath the skin surface. While some cystic acne is hereditary according to the Mayo Clinic, primary causes are dirt on the skin, hormonal changes and hormonal imbalances.

Yoga and Hormonal Balance

Lexi Yoga states that one of the effects of yoga is that it can stimulate and balance endocrine function. This occurs by pressurizing and depressurizing specific glands as a result of slow, specific movements. According to Bikram Yoga, the postures assist the endocrine glands in secreting appropriate hormones and encouraging a hormonal balance.

Hormones, Bikram Yoga and Cystic Acne

As one of the causes of cystic acne is hormonal imbalance and one of the benefits of Bikram yoga is balance of the hormonal system, you might conclude that doing Bikram yoga will help to alleviate cystic acne. There is, however, no research to document that by balancing the hormones through Bikram yoga can alleviate cystic acne.

Sweating, Bikram Yoga and Cystic Acne

Another primary cause of cystic acne is dirt on the skin. The heated room in Bikram Yoga aides the body in sweating and flushes toxins and impurities from the body though the skin. However, again, It cannot be concluded that sweating from Bikram yoga sessions will alleviate cystic acne.
