Holding yoga poses requires good posture and core strength, which improves with practice. Yoga incorporates a variety of one-legged poses and moves that require you to balance the majority of your weight on one foot. These moves build strength in your ankle and leg muscles, but they also rely heavily on correct foot and toe form.

Factors

Just as yoga challenges weak shoulders and tight hamstrings, toes that are inflexible and tight must also be stretched and trained, according to Julie Gudmestad, an Iyengar Yoga instructor and licensed physical therapist writing in "Yoga Journal." Essentially, the tendency to squeeze your toes together indicates that you need to stretch your toes for flexibility. Correct toe form is vital to improving balance on and off the mat. Spreading your toes gives you a broader foundation during balance-focused yoga poses. Specifically, when you separate your toes during yoga, your body is better able to respond to subtle shifts in weight and react appropriately, explains Gudmestad.

Effects

Spreading your toes during yoga poses not only improves your balance, it also helps you improve the range of motion in your toes. When you wear shoes that squeeze your toes together, you can alter the natural alignment of your toes and cause other muscles to perform the work meant for your toes. Practicing proper foot and toe form during yoga poses can help you regain a more natural line in your feet, as long as you also switch to better-fitting shoes.

Function

Spreading your toes gives you a stable base during yoga poses, helping you to balance. Although core strength is essential to one-legged poses such as the tree pose, incorrect foot form will cause you to fall out of the pose. When you separate your toes, you're redistributing your weight to the outside edges of your feet as opposed to the middle of your feet. This more even distribution of your weight contributes to healthy alignment in and out of yoga class.

Benefits

You need to spread your toes during yoga in order to hold poses, but you also gain benefits that go beyond yoga class. Pushing off with stiff toes during walking or stair climbing causes other muscles and joints in your legs to compensate for irregular gait patterns. This can result in knee problems, tendinitis or even bunion formation. Training your toes to separate during yoga poses and increasing the flexibility of your toes can improve your gait.

Considerations

Yoga practice improves flexibility, balance and strength. The American Council on Exercise recommends that you devote at least 30 minutes to flexibility training three times per week. Stretching and flexibility workouts such as yoga improve posture and range of movement, reduce your risk of injury and help relieve muscle tension. As you practice yoga, you'll see improvements in your balance. This can be attributed partly to improvements in toe flexibility, range of motion and form.
