As members of the nutritional shake family, Myoplex shakes are formulated with essential nutrients necessary for good health. That doesn't mean, however, that drinking Myoplex shakes will result in a boost in your overall health, but they can have certain advantages for some people, most notably athletes. Talk with your doctor before adding Myoplex shakes to your daily diet to be sure they are right for you.

All the Basics

One 17-ounce serving of the chocolate fudge or rich dark chocolate original Myoplex shakes contains 300 calories and 7 grams of fat, of which 1.5 grams are saturated. That translates to about 11 percent of your total fat limit for the day and about 8 percent of your daily saturated fat limit. The strawberry cream, French vanilla, and cookies and cream versions contain 1 gram of saturated fat per serving. That's an important consideration because a Myoplex shake isn't that much sustenance, so you'll have to decide if 8 percent of your saturated fat limit is worth that one shake. Too much saturated fat increases your risk of heart disease.

Protein Is a Plus

A 17-ounce original Myoplex shake, in any flavor, contains 42 grams of protein, which is 91 percent of the 46 grams of protein women need each day and 75 percent of the 56 grams men require each day. Myoplex powdered shake mix, when made according to the directions on the package, also contains 42 grams of protein per serving. The Myoplex Strength Formula, which comes in vanilla or chocolate cream flavors, contains 25 grams of protein per 14-ounce serving. Because protein is essential for human survival, you might talk to your doctor about Myoplex shakes if you're worried that you don't eat enough protein. Protein deficiency isn't common in the United States, however, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes.

Essential Vitamins and Minerals

Both the original and Strength Formula Myoplex shakes, in any flavor, contain 100 percent of the vitamin C you need each day. Vitamin C keeps your immune system strong and supports healthy skin, gums and teeth. You'll also get 100 percent of the vitamin E you need each day. Vitamin E provides a line of defense to your cells, which can cut your risk of certain health problems such as cancer. All Myoplex shakes supply potassium, calcium, iron, zinc, B vitamins and vitamins A, D and K, as well.

Myoplex Lite

If you're looking for a lower-fat shake, the Myoplex Lite shakes contain 170 calories and 2 grams of fat, of which 0.5 gram is saturated. The powders, when prepared, contain 180 calories and 1.5 to 2 grams of fat, of which 0.5 to 1 gram are saturated. The lite shakes contain 20 grams of protein per 11-ounce serving, but don't contain more than 4 grams of sugar, which is equal to about a teaspoon.

Should I Drink Myoplex Shakes?

In addition to the nutrients, an original Myoplex shake in any flavor contains just 1 gram of sugar. The shakes, however, contain a large amount of sodium per serving, ranging between 580 and 630 milligrams. These totals are between 39 percent and 42 percent of the daily 1,500-milligram limit recommended by the American Heart Association. Too much sodium increases your risk of heart attack and stroke. The Strength Formula shakes contain between 240 and 280 milligrams of sodium per serving, and the powders contain between 250 and 270 milligrams per packet.
