Many athletes, bodybuilders and fitness aficionados want to build up their muscles. A challenging workout program, a healthy diet and overall commitment to the process are required to accomplish this. However, there are some other things to take into consideration when you are trying to build muscle.

Genetics

Everyone is built differently, and some individuals may have an easier time building muscle than others. One person may have naturally smaller muscles, such as calves or forearms, than another. Bodybuilding.com points out that you should always train those particular muscles. Another genetic factor is height. If you are well above 6 feet tall, you may notice a shorter person performing the same exercise as you and lifting much more weight. This happens because the weight has a further distance to travel when you are tall. You can make modifications when lifting weights, depending on your height and size.

Compound Exercises and Workout Progression

The Critical Bench.com explains that compound weightlifting exercises are crucial for adding muscle and that weightlifting machines aren't nearly as effective as free weights. Examples of compound exercises include bench presses, squats and pullups. If you continue to use the same exercises with the same number of repetitions, your progress will stall. Continuously increase repetitions and weight to build muscle. Always try to do more repetitions than you did the previous time on that particular exercise. Add more weight if the exercise is not challenging enough for your muscles.

Natural Movement

Sean Nalewanyj, a professional bodybuilder, points out that working out with good technique and form is important, and you should not move unnaturally. Unnatural movements and attempting to work out with absolutely flawless form can cause injury. He advises using a minuscule amount of body momentum for an exercise like barbell rows. Stay loose, and move naturally.

Considerations

Consult your doctor before beginning a new workout program. Consider hiring a personal trainer if you join a gym. Never use illegal or physically harmful substances to aid muscle growth.
