The beneficial effects of exercise on the body have been widely touted by physicians and fitness experts. What these professionals sometimes fail to note, however, are the benefits of physical activity on the brain. It is now known that exercising regularly contributes to mental fitness. So, a healthy body can mean a healthy brain as well.
What It Does
Working out causes alterations in the brain. In this case, change is good, as the brain experiences growth. New synapses, which are connections, are formed when the body is engaged in physical activity. A sharper mind occurs in which memory is improved, cognition increased. The brain also benefits by a greater production of serotonin, a chemical which acts as a mood stabilizer to relieve depression.
How It Does It
The brain creates new synapses when blood flow and oxygen levels are increased. This allows the brain to function at a higher level. Exercise also helps to balance insulin levels, which allows for more logical thinking and greater concentration than when the body is at rest. Taking a walk or run, therefore, really does "clear the mind."
What To Do
Any amount of physical exertion can have these beneficial effects on the brain. Select physical activities that you enjoy and can perform at your present level. Whole body exercises are preferred, as these help overall conditioning. Walking and swimming are popular ways of getting the exercise you need and can be performed by just about anyone of any age. Those with physical challenges should explore creative ways to get the exercise their bodies and brains need. Many exercises can be performed while sitting or lying down.
Getting Started
Check with your physician before beginning any formal exercise program. The Seattle Human Resources Department recommends starting slowly. Engage in activity at a moderate rate for a limited amount of time. Aim for 30 minutes a day. You can break this half hour into 10-minute intervals, if you lack stamina, and build up gradually to longer periods of time. Stretch your muscles before beginning and drink water before, during and after exercise. Find a partner to work out with and you will find the task easier and more enjoyable.
