Migraine headaches, commonly referred to as migraines, are chronic headaches that cause severe pain. In moderate or severe cases, migraines can be extremely debilitating and are often accompanied by sensory symptoms. These symptoms may include sensitivity to light, nausea or tingling in the extremities. There are effective treatments for migraines, including the use of caffeine.
Significance
While formal treatments such as prescription medications are generally used when migraines begin to affect patients in a more severe manner, some patients prefer a natural method of treatment. Caffeine can be effective in the treatment of migraines and is often used in certain medications marketed as specific migraine treatments.
Caffeine as Treatment
Caffeine is effective in the treatment of migraines due to the effect it has on the affected areas of the body. When you experience a migraine, the blood vessels in the head and neck become widened and dilated. This dilation creates pressure and the result is a migraine headache. Caffeine is believed to constrict the blood vessels, alleviating the dilation and restoring the blood vessels to their normal state. It should be noted that caffeine is effective in combination with other ingredients but is not considered to be effective when used on its own.
Over-the-Counter Medications
Over-the-counter pain medications can be taken to treat migraines. Check with your physician to see which of these medications is best in treating your migraine headaches. However, some over-the-counter pain medications are specifically marketed for the treatment of migraines. These medications typically contain a combination of acetaminophen, aspirin and caffeine.
Prescription Medications
Prescription medications are typically prescribed to treat pain-specific symptoms. Some patients may be prescribed the sedative Butalbital. To treat migraines, Butalbital is available in a combination form, which contains caffeine. Because it is a sedative, it is not typically used for regular treatment, however, it is an option. Your physician can determine whether a Butalbital combination is appropriate for you.
Caffeine in Beverages or Foods
Currently, there isn't enough clinical research to confirm that caffeine in beverages or foods is effective in alleviating migraine symptoms. Unless directed by your physician, consuming these items is appropriate. However, do so in moderation; overconsumption of caffeinated items can cause dehydration and prompt the start of a migraine.
