The tread of sport bike tires will wear down over time due to regular riding techniques. Mountain biking trails can eat away the knobby tread. Riding your BMX on rough asphalt can easily wear down the tread as well. Many bikers replace tires unnecessarily due to slight tread wear. According to cycling expert Sheldon Brown, small cracks in the tire tread will not hinder the performance of your sport bike.

Step 1

Place your bike sideways on the ground to allow the tires to move freely. Detach the rubber caps from the air valves of the tires. Place the head of the tire pressure gauge over the stem of the air valve.

Step 2

Press down on the tire pressure gauge to release air from the tubes of the tires. Deflate them halfway to increase the pliability. Stretch the rubber body of the tires to ensure no lacerations or punctures have formed.

Step 3

Rotate the tires to ensure the tread has not worn down to expose the inner tubes. Replace the tires if more than five treads have been ripped from the rubber body. Inflate your sport bike tires to the suggested PSI number on the sidewall.

Step 4

Extend the kick stand to balance your bike on its two tires. Insert a penny into the various grooves of the tire tread. Replace the tires if the tread does not cover the top of Lincoln's head.

Things You'll Need

  • Bike pump
  • Penny
