A pull-up uses your body weight as resistance to strengthen the latissimus dorsi, the widest muscle on the back, along with muscles across your shoulders and down your arms. Choose a pull-up bar that can support twice your weight and mount it in a location that is convenient for you when working out, but out of the way when not in use. Never mount your pull-up bar directly into drywall.
Step 1
Measure the distance at least 3 feet from your upright walls and mark the initial location for your pull-up bar. If you intend on mounting the bar to the ceiling, you need to measure 3 feet from the side wall and 3 feet from the front or back wall to confirm you have enough space for your workouts. Measure a distance 10 to 22 inches down from the ceiling and 3 feet from the side wall when mounting your pull-up bar on the wall.
Step 2
Slide a stud finder over the wall to locate the wall studs or the ceiling to find the ceiling joists. Mark the joists or wall stud locations with a pencil or masking tape. Determine the center of the stud or joist by pushing a small wire through the drywall. Find both sides of the stud or joist and measure the width to locate the center.
Step 3
Place your first pull up support against the wall or ceiling over the stud or joist at your chosen location. Mark the support mounting holes onto the wall or ceiling.
Step 4
Install a 3/16-inch by 3-inch wood drill bit into your drill. Drill pilot holes into the wall or ceiling at your marked mounting locations.
Step 5
Line up your pull-up bar support with your pilot holes. Drive 1/4-inch by 4-inch hex head lag bolts through the openings on your support and into the stud or joist. Use a 7/16-inch or 9/16-inch socket and a socket adapter bit with your drill to install the bolts into the wall or ceiling.
Step 6
Install the bar to the first pull-up support. The installation of the bar varies from manufacturer to manufacturer.
Step 7
Install the second pull-up support to the pull-up bar. Place the support against the wall or ceiling and mark your mounting locations.
Step 8
Drill your pilot holes into the ceiling joist or wall studs. Use your drill to install the lag bolts through the second support and into the wall stud or ceiling joist.
