How to Do Shallow Water Aerobics

Water aerobics allows individuals of all physical abilities and demographics to engage in aerobic exercise because the buoyancy of the water helps to ease joint pressure while the water provides a high level of resistance. Water aerobics can be performed in both deep and shallow water and are often taught in a class setting by a certified aquatic aerobics instructor. You should receive clearance from your health care provider before beginning any exercise program.

Step 1

Get into a pool or body of water that is between waist and chest deep. Shallow water aerobics classes are taught at various fitness and community centers in most communities.

Step 2

Begin exercise routine. Aerobics moves may include marching, squats and running in place. Shallow water aerobics typically works the lower body.

Step 3

Complete aerobics routine with stretching exercises.

Tips and Warnings

  • The deeper the water is, the less impact on joints and the more calories burned.
  • Shallow water aerobics should be done under the instruction of a certified aerobics instructor.
