If you've ever shopped in a fitness store that specially caters yoga clothing then there's a good chance that you've been blinded by the price tag. But there's no need to spend a fortune on yoga clothing; in fact, if you look around a yoga class, you'll notice that people are wearing all sorts of clothing. There are plenty of less expensive alternatives for clothes that will allow you to move and feel comfortable while practicing yoga.

Gym Clothes

The first place to look for alternative clothing is your closet; if you already own clothes that are appropriate for working out and sweating in then there's no need to spend additional money. One of the most important aspects of what you wear to a yoga class is that the material should stretch and move with you; clothing with spandex is beneficial so that your clothes do not interfere with movement during poses. Fit Sugar recommends wearing pants rather than shorts, so that more sweat will be absorbed in the material.

T-Shirts and Tank Tops

Most T-shirts and tank tops will work fine during yoga and chances are you have some worn tops lying around that you will not mind sweating in. This is especially beneficial for men, who have a harder time finding appropriate clothing for yoga class than women, according to the New York Times. Men can also make good use of the shorts they already have and wear for activities such as running, football or soccer. "The New York Times" also recommends that men wear inexpensive lightweight sweatpants, cut into shorts, if desired.

Discount Stores

Discount clothing stores such as Nordstrom Rack, TJ Maxx and Marshalls sell yoga and workout clothing at reduced prices. The merchandise is often what the better-named stores had left over from the previous year, but there is usually not a very large difference in styles from year to year. Try the clothes on in the store before buying them since at times the merchandise can be defective or damaged.

Online

Websites such as ebay or Amazon.com often sell yoga clothing at a discount. Additionally, many shops that sell yoga or workout wear offer special discounts for online shoppers. The drawback is that you are not able to try the clothing on before you buy it, but most do allow returns for exchange or refund. To be safe, shop brands that you are already familiar with so that you will have some idea of how their clothing fits you.
