Hatha yoga focuses on physical postures and breath awareness. There are many different styles of Hatha yoga. Some styles are vigorous, while other are restorative or have therapeutic applications. Most hatha yoga classes are accessible to all levels. What all examples of hatha yoga have in common is the common goal of preparing the body and quieting the mind for spiritual meditation.

Vigorous Hatha Yoga

Vigorous hatha yoga examples, such as Ashtanga or Power Yoga, make use of a linked series of yoga postures called vinyasa. Vinyasa classes flow quickly, with breath guiding all movement. Often, components of the well-known sun salutation are repeated through out the class and used to link standing postures. Vigorous hatha yoga classes combine strength and flexibility exercises with a cardiovascular work-out. While vigorous hatha yoga classes are accessible to all levels, the fast pace can sometimes be challenging to a beginning yoga student. Quick transitions do not leave time for alignment adjustments.

Restorative Hatha Yoga

Restorative hatha yoga classes make use of yoga props, long holding of poses and slow transitions to aid in healing, deep stretching and full body relaxation. Types of restorative yoga includes svaroopa and yin yoga. Yoga props such as blankets, bolsters and blocks are used to support the body in seated and supine poses. Since movement and weight barring exercise is minimal in restorative hatha, this example is most beneficial to physical flexibility and meditation practice. Restorative yoga can be challenging to a beginner because of long holds and difficulty in adjusting props correctly.

Therapeutic Hatha Yoga

Hatha yoga can also have therapeutic applications and be used to alleviate chronic back pain, aid in injury recovery, support physical therapy and a host of other medical conditions. There are many examples of therapeutic hatha yoga programs, including Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy and Structural Yoga Therapy. Therapeutic yoga classes are typically delivered one-on-one or in small group settings specific to a particular condition. As with any alternate health program, individuals should consult with their doctors before beginning a Hatha yoga program.

Considerations

Most hatha yoga classes are typically a mix of yoga styles and include elements of vigorous and restorative types. When selecting a yoga class, consider your own physical fitness goals and experience level. Many yoga studios will allow new students to take a free trial class before committing to a class package or series.
