You can use a day fruit diet detox to help you kick-start a healthy eating plan, give your digestive system a rest after overindulgence, or simply to boost your intake of delicious, vitamin-packed fruit. There are several options for doing a fruit detox diet, and you should choose one that best suits your tastes and lifestyle. Many positive benefits are attributed to fruit detoxes, but there are also risks involved in restricting your food intake, so it is best to consult your doctor before undertaking a strict detox.

Multi-fruit Detox

For a one-day fruit detox, the "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Going Raw" suggests eating a wide range of fruit because you will benefit from the variety of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants found in different types of fruit. Don't forget that avocados, tomatoes and cucumber are fruits, too. Plus, eating a variety alleviates the boredom of eating only one food for the whole day, which may be an important factor.

Single Fruit Detox

For a day fruit detox diet, you may elect to eat just one type of fruit. "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Going Raw" recommends grapefruit as especially good for a short fruit detox because of its high levels of vitamin C and bioflavonoids. A research study lead by Carol Johnston of the nutrition department at Arizona State University, and published in the "Journal of the American College of Nutrition" in 2006, notes that people who have adequate vitamin C intake burn more fat than people who have low vitamin C levels -- so any citrus fruit would be a good choice for a day detox. Or you could use grapes, which are rich in antioxidants and are recommended by "The Detox Mono Diet."

Fruit Juice Detox

Juice diets can include both fruit and vegetable juices, but for your fruit diet detox, you can stick to a variety of fruit. The benefit of juice, versus whole fruit, is that it is easier to digest, according to "The Detox Answer" -- and because you can mix several varieties of fruit juices in one glass, you get a concentrated dose of vitamins and phytochemicals. Make your own juice whenever possible, as store-bought juice will have been heat-treated to preserve it, reducing the nutritional value.

Claims

Some of the benefits of a fruit diet detox include weight loss, total body cleansing, enhanced immune system and higher energy levels, according to "Detox for the Rest of Us." These benefits are attributed to the fact that fruit is rich in vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals. Because most fruit also has a high water content and plenty of fiber, it keeps you hydrated and helps you feel full.

Cautions

There are risks associated with very restrictive diets, which you should consider before starting a fruit diet detox. According to Susan Moores, R.D., author of the MSNBC.com article, "Experts Warn of Diet Detox Dangers," detox diets can upset blood sugar, potassium and sodium levels in the body and are not safe for pregnant women or for people suffering from diabetes, heart or kidney disease. Long-term dieting can also lead to muscle breakdown and nutritional deficiencies.
