When the flu season comes around, a significant proportion of the population will experience the all-too-familiar symptoms of sore throats, headaches and fever. Such infections can occur at any time of the year, although taking zinc supplements might help prevent the virus from taking hold. Always speak to your physician before using supplements.

Zinc

Zinc plays a role in more than 80 enzymes across the human body. Charles Poliquin, the Canadian strength coach and nutritionist who has worked with a range of Olympic athletes, notes that the micro-mineral affects hormonal balance, sense of taste and smell and the rate of tissue repair; it also can boost the immune system response against bacteria, viruses and other infectious agents.

Flu Virus

You constantly come into contact with the influenza virus, more commonly known as flu. According to researchers from the University of California at Berkeley, the body creates antibodies to various strains of the virus, but if the virus mutates, the immune system must respond accordingly by quickly producing new antibodies.

Immune System

The immune system requires a steady supply of zinc to maintain a balance between its two difference branches. The first arm, often referred to as the Th1 arm, takes responsibility for killing off viruses and other invaders. The other branch, known as Th2, deals with a more specific response and allergies. Patrick Holford, the founder of the Institute of Optimum Nutrition, explains that zinc deficiency can cause Th2 dominance; reducing your resistance to colds and flu.

Other Considerations

The immune system requires a range of nutrients for optimal function. As well as a generous supply of Vitamin C and other antioxidants, you might need more Vitamin D during the flu season. Dr. Joseph Mercola, the Illinois-based physician and the author of the "No-Grain Diet," recommends taking Vitamin D-3 supplements during the winter, especially if you live in northern areas where you don't get much sunshine.

Expert Insight

Poliquin tests all new clients for their zinc levels and has found that the majority come in deficient in this mineral. He believes that zinc deficiency increases the chances of coming down with flu, and points to the use of supplements such as zinc picolinate or zinc citrate as an effective way to restore zinc levels. Cheaper forms like zinc oxide do not provide the same rate of absorption.
