Controlling both appetite and blood sugar levels are important aspects of weight loss. Consuming excess sugar over long periods of time not only causes weight gain but can gradually lead to serious diseases such as type II diabetes, where the body is unable to use insulin efficiently. Certain herbs may help control sugar cravings and regulate blood sugar levels. However, most herbs are not yet FDA approved and should be used only under the direction of a trained health care practitioner.

Gymnema Sylvestre

Gymnema sylvestre is an herbal remedy used in Ayurvedic medicine to treat diabetes and regulate blood glucose levels. Its Indian name literally means "sugar destroyer." It is also believed to decrease the tongue's ability to detect sweetness and thereby helps to control sugar cravings. According to several studies cited by RestorativeMedicine.com, gymnema has the ability to lower blood sugar levels when taken on a regular basis. Drs. Friedman and McLellan, authors of "Healing Diabetes: Complementary Naturopathic and Drug Treatments," recommend 200 mg daily for weight management. Check with your medical doctor before using gymnema for weight loss or to control blood sugar.

Bitter Melon

Bitter melon is a fruit used by herbalists to treat diabetes, cancer and immune disorders. It is rich in vitamins and minerals and is considered a highly nutritious food. The Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center explains that the chemical constituents of the plant help the body break down and utilize glucose, or sugar, more efficiently, and help to improve blood sugar levels. It should not be taken along with insulin or if you are being treated for hypoglycemia. It is also contraindicated for pregnant women. Check with your health care provider before trying bitter melon.

Fenugreek

Fenugreek is another herb used in Ayurvedic medicine to treat diabetes. The Clayton College of Natural Health Herb Reference Guide notes that it helps stimulate the pancreas to produce digestive enzymes and is useful for weight loss and as an appetite suppressant. It is purported to inhibit the absorption of cholesterol and contains fat-dissolving substances. It also helps prevent water retention. As there is still insufficient scientific evidence to support these claims, it is important to consult a doctor before using fenugreek for medicinal purposes.

Ginseng

Ginseng is a popular root herb used for energy and weight loss. It is the Asian or panax ginseng that tends to be stimulating. American ginseng has a more calming effect. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, clinical studies show that American ginseng also appears to help lower blood sugar levels. It strengthens the immune system and improves mental performance and overall well-being. The standard dose is 100 to 200 mg taken 1 to 3 times daily. Consult with your health care provider before taking ginseng.
