The street skateboard doesn't feature a braking mechanism of any kind. The power slide is an advanced technique that lets you decrease the speed of your skateboard, as the urethane skateboard wheels can slide across a smooth asphalt surface. Novice skateboarders are often intimidated by the power slide due to the high speed it requires. Always wear a properly fitting helmet while learning new tricks. The Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute recommends using a skateboard helmet with an EPS foam lining.

Step 1

Place your leading foot over the four bolts located at the front of the skateboard. Lean forward while pushing off the ground with your opposing foot. Continue to push until you reach a comfortable speed.

Step 2

Align your back foot over the four bolts found at the rear of the skateboard. Swing your hips from side to side to get acclimated with the looseness of the skateboarding trucks. Lean backwards while pushing your back foot in a forward direction.

Step 3

Allow your wheels to slide across the pavement while remaining in a horizontal riding stance. Rotate your shoulders as your momentum begins to slow. Push your leading foot forward to transfer back into the normal riding stance.

Tips and Warnings

  • Practice these basic movements to master the power sliding maneuver. Add a few extra pushes to the start of the technique to increase the length of your power slide.
