The elliptical trainer might look kind of funny to those not used to the machine, but its myriad benefits are no laughing matter. Elliptical machines can offer a hardcore workout, smoothly working your lower body and, if they come with handles, your arms. They also help stave off boredom from the same ho-hum treadmill or exercise bike.
Impact, or Lack of One
The top benefit of an elliptical is its total lack of impact. Unlike jogging, jumping rope, aerobics or many other cardiovascular workouts, the elliptical puts absolutely no stress or strain on your joints. Movements are instead fluid and smooth. This makes the elliptical a good choice for beginners and the older set as well as those suffering from knee, joint, hip or back issues or recovering from injuries.
Combination
The elliptical is a potpourri of different exercises, combining them all into one. Your legs move in lengthy, circular strides, rather than the standard back and forth of running or walking. This gives you the same movements you'd get from cross-country skiing, hiking and bicycling. As a mix between the treadmill and the stair climber, the elliptical also works well for cross training.
Calories
Even though Women's Fitness puts low impact at the top of the benefit list, calorie burning might tie it. An average elliptical workout burns off 13 calories per minute, with high intensity workouts reaching as high as 720 calories per hour. A 30-minute workout for a 150-lb. woman burns off an estimated 387 calories. Although you're burning mega-calories, the workout does not seem as tough, because elliptical machines have a low "perceived rate of exertion," which means you don't feel like you're working as hard as you are.
Other Pluses
Elliptical machines are generally much smaller and lighter than your average treadmill, which makes them ideal for cramped spaces and easier to move. Some also come with handles attached that let you work your arms as well as your lower body, giving you a full-body workout. At the very least, the leg movements alone use all your lower leg muscles, as well as your butt muscles, while giving you a full cardio workout.
