Fungus refers to bacterial growths that can lead to infections, such as candidiasis, or yeast infections, athlete's foot and "jock itch" -- fungus that causes itching and redness in your pelvic or upper-thigh area. Fungal infections are common and are often treated with topical ointments, medications and/or lifestyle changes, such as improved hygiene. A healthy diet that includes antifungal foods may help prevent or alleviate your symptoms. For best results, seek specific guidance from a qualified professional.

Garlic and Spices

Garlic, a vegetable from the allium family, has been used as an alternative medicine remedy, cooking ingredient and food for centuries. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, garlic and other spices, including oregano, cinnamon, cloves and sage, provide potent antifungal properties. While raw, fresh garlic tends to provide the most nutritional benefits, minced or chopped garlic, garlic butter and roasted garlic, prepared by baking whole garlic cloves in your oven until soft, provide valuable secondary options. Cinnamon, cloves and sage provide simple ways off adding antifungal benefits to baked goods, such as oatmeal cookies and bran muffins, and sweet marinades for meats and fish. Antifungal spices also provide healthy alternatives to high-fat and salty seasonings in your favorite dishes.

Coconut Oil and Water

Coconut oil and water infused with coconut may also help alleviate fungus. The dermatologist and author of "The Perricone Weight-Loss Diet" and other diet-themed books, Dr. Nicholas Perricone, describes coconut water as a low-calorie, nutritious beverage that promotes the balance of important bodily salts, known as electrolytes, and helps prevent and reduce fungal infections. Incorporating coconut oil into steamed vegetables, soups and other dishes may help alleviate yeast infections associated with fungus. Since coconut products also contain rich amounts of antioxidants, they enhance your immune system strength and may also help prevent infections in your digestive tract.

Yogurt and Kefir

Yogurt and kefir are fermented milk products that provide rich amounts of probiotics -- healthy bacteria that enhance digestive function and may help prevent infections caused by harmful bacteria. Though additional research is needed, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center, probiotics have shown some benefits in reducing candida overgrowth. For best results, incorporate yogurt with live active cultures and/or kefir regularly. Both foods are also rich sources of calcium -- a nutrient people with recurrent yeast infections tend to consume too little of. Additional sources of probiotics include fermented milk, fermented cabbage, buttermilk, sauerkraut, fermented soy products and fortified foods and beverages.
