Those unsightly lumps and bumps on your thighs, buttocks and hips are known as cellulite, a condition that plagues many women, no matter their size or age. This genetic condition is caused by an accumulation of fat within your connective tissues, and it makes the skin above look puckered and dimpled. No at-home solutions will get rid of your cellulite, but certain products and techniques can minimize its appearance.

Lose Weight

Cellulite may look more apparent on people with higher weights than on those who are thinner. Furthermore, a lifestyle that does not include exercise can put you at risk for developing more cellulite. Losing pounds if you are overweight may lessen the look of your lumps, as can building up the strength of your underlying muscles. Getting yourself to a healthy weight and increasing your exercise will not make your cellulite vanish, but it may improve its appearance. Ask your doctor before you begin any weight-loss regimen or new physical activities.

Apply Caffeine Gel

Gels that contain caffeine can constrict your skin and make your cellulite look less noticeable, but the results will be temporary. In an article in "Allure" magazine, dermatologist Ranella Hirsch states that applying an anti-cellulite gel with caffeine each morning can reduce your lumps and bumps for a few hours. After showering, dry your skin and smooth on a caffeine gel over any areas where you have cellulite. You can reapply the gel mid-day if you notice the tightening effect has lessened.

Massage Your Skin

Massaging your cellulite-plagued skin using a vigorous motion can increase blood flow to the area. Improved circulation may get rid of excess fluid that has built up and, thereby, improve the look of your cellulite. Use your hands to rub your skin with a circular motion once a day for a few minutes. Be advised, however, that MayoClinic.com states that these results will often be temporary.

Use Retinol Cream

At night, "Allure" magazine recommends applying an anti-cellulite cream that contains retinol. This will help refine your skin's texture and encourage it to make more collagen, the component that makes skin supple and smooth. The retinol cream may even out any dimpled areas when you use it for a prolonged period of time. Aging Skin Net states that no cream will remove the cellulite from your body, though some can improve the look of your skin on the surface. Apply the cream to clean skin each night, and allow it to absorb before you climb into bed.
