Hypothyroidism is a chronic condition marked by poor production of thyroid hormones, according to Phyllis Balch, author of "Prescription for Nutritional Healing." These hormones help control metabolism, or the conversion of food components into energy for rebuilding organ, bone and tissue cells. Hypothyroidism may result in weight gain, which may lead to heart disease and damage to your organs. Certain foods may be harmful to your body if you suffer from hypothyroidism.
Iodine-rich Foods
Although iodine is a primary component of thyroid hormones, increasing your intake of this mineral may cause or worsen the symptoms of hypothyroidism, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Avoid foods high in iodine unless recommended by your doctor. Table salt, summer squash, garlic, asparagus, lima beans, mushrooms and turnip greens contain large amounts of iodine.
Refined Flours
Refined flours, such as those found in white breads, bagels, pies, cakes, pastas and fast food sandwich buns, are laden with simple carbohydrates, which can drastically elevate blood glucose levels. Excess blood glucose may be toxic to your thyroid gland. Foods containing refined flours may suppress thyroid function, contributing to weight gain, according to Balch.
Refined Sugars
Like refined flours, refined sugars are simple carbohydrates that your body quickly turns into glucose, interfering with proper thyroid function, according to Balch, Hard candies, chocolate bars, doughnuts, soft drinks, liqueurs, ice cream and commercially packaged fruit beverages contain large amounts of refined sugars.
