The blood type diet, created and publicized by Dr. Peter D'Adamo, ND, is a controversial nutrition regime that is based on theories from paleontology, human evolution and diaspora. It maps the movement and migration of man-kind and the types of resources he has used over the millennia to support himself, such as hunter-gatherer lifestyles versus agricultural living. These changes in location are noted to have affected the biology of man, down to his blood. The blood type diet distinguishes which foods are good and bad based on the blood types, A, B, O and AB.

Goat and Lamb

D'Adamo notes on his website that people with Type B should consume lean meats. These meats include goat, lamb, mutton and venison, but also smaller animals such as rabbit. He notes that these animals were commonly consumed by the ancestors who carried some of the same genes as blood types of today. The largest population of Type Bs are noted to be exist in the countries of Japan, Mongolia, China, India and in people who inhabit western Europe, where Asian nomadic people were thought to have migrated. These European countries consist of Germany and Austria. D'Adamo further notes that chicken is thought of as a lean meat, that it is not among the most beneficial types of protein for blood Type Bs. Chicken is noted to contain a lectin, which the body does not respond to well. The aforementioned goat, lamb, mutton, rabbit and venison do not contain this lectin.

Dairy

Dairy is noted by D'Adamo to be a great food for blood Type Bs. He states that the migration of people across Asian countries caused them to set up cultures that were dependent on herding and domesticating animals. The culturing of dairy products is a result of this lifestyle and in the days of no refrigeration, culturing was the process by which dairy-life could be prolonged. He specifically recommends low fat dairy products and notes that eggs, another product of a lifestyle of animal husbandry are beneficial.

Green Vegetables

Finally, D'Adamo notes that Type Bs have the most flexible of diets, they are between the extremes found in the Type Os who are mostly meat-eaters and the Type A vegetarians. He notes, however, that green vegetables are of particular benefit to Type Bs. He does not specifically note which green vegetables are the most beneficial, but another blood type researcher, Laura Powers, Ph.D. notes that all blood types would benefit from excluding green vegetables such as broad beans, celery, cucumber, fava beans, peas and Swiss chard from their diet.
