Makers of toning shoes claim they define your legs while you walk, exercise or simply wear the shoes every day. They are heavy and have very thick, curved soles that create an unstable walking surface. The manufacturers state that this engages lower-body muscles and causes them to work harder. But be skeptical: According to a study by the American Council on Exercise, there is no conclusive evidence of these claims.

Earth Footwear

Earth shoes were first sold in Copenhagen in 1968. Their designer, Anne Kalso, based the "negative heel" concept on a yoga pose known as Mountain, in which the foot is flexed or toes are positioned at a slightly higher angle than the heel. In 1970, Earth shoes debuted in the U.S. Earth Footwear shoes are designed at a 3.7-degree upward angle. Earth shoes also come with arch support and patented BioFoam cushioning that is touted for its shock absorption.

Reebok EasyTone

Reebok EasyTone shoes are available in three styles: the original EasyTone walkers, Runtone running shoes and Traintone workout shoes. EasyTone shoes are also available in the ReeInspire, ReeInvigorate and Flip models. The concept behind EasyTone is Reebok's Moving Air Technology, which features "balance pods" under the heel and ball of the foot. These pods, while soft to walk on, create an unstable surface, whether you are moving or standing still.

FitFlop Footwear

FitFlop Footwear began with FitFlop sandals and now includes shoes and winter boots. The shoes feature what the manufacturers call "muscle-loading Microwobbleboard technology," which was developed in London in 2006. According to the company's website, this technology provides better shock absorption, relieves pressure on the feet and engages more muscle activity during movement. The American Podiatric Medical Association approves FitFlops.

Skechers Shape-Ups and Shape-Ups Toners

Skechers Shape-Ups and Shape-Up Toners are available in five shoe groups: Walk, Train, Trail, Run and Work. Each group is designed for particular use and workout needs. Skecher Shape-Ups are designed with a rolling surface sole for instability, while the newer Toners feature "Kinetic Toning Pods' in the middle of the shoes' soles.

MBTs

MBT shoes are known for the rolling action of their curved sole design. This creates an unstable surface that mimics walking on dirt and grass. MBT shoes feature a patented "Masai Sensor" under the heel to create this instability and rolling motion.
