Nattokinase is an enzyme extracted from fermented soybeans, also called natto. It is made by the specific bacteria used in the fermentation process of natto and is not found in other soy products. There is some scientific evidence in humans that nattokinase reduces blood pressure, but more research is required to better assess the risk and benefits of nattokinase supplements for the treatment of hypertension.

Inhibits Clot Formation

Nattokinase as an enzyme breaks down the proteins that make up blood clots. A primary objective of treating people at risk for coronary heart disease and stroke is to reduce blood clot formation. A study in the March 2009 issue of "Nutrition Research" reports that nattokinase supplements reduced concentrations of clotting factors in healthy volunteers and in people at high risk for developing cardiovascular disease.

Decreases Blood Pressure

In a clinical trial published in the August 2008 issue of "Hypertension Research," an eight-week treatment with nattokinase enzyme supplements significantly reduced blood pressure. Because of the potential for interaction with other medications and complete lack of toxicity information, nattokinase supplements require more rigorous scientific study before being promoted as an anti-hypertensive agent.

Adverse Effects

A report in the March 2008 issue of "Internal Medicine" describes a case of a woman who experienced a brain hemorrhage after taking 400 mg per day of nattokinase for seven days. She also took aspirin daily and was considered at high risk for having a stroke.
