If you do not have health and dental insurance, you understand how costly it can be if you need medical or dental care. Many people are offered insurance through their employer -- in some cases this can be expensive, especially when you add family members to your plan. If you are in between jobs or laid off, your insurance may get canceled. Finding an affordable insurance option will bring you peace of mind during trying times.

Significance

Health insurance helps cover the cost of most of your medical needs such as physician visits, hospital visits, co-pays, medical procedures, medical supplies, prescriptions and certain surgeries, explains Medline Plus. The cost of medical care is on the rise, so insurance should be a priority to prevent financial strain. Dental services can be equally as expensive -- X-rays, dental procedures, oral surgery and extractions can cost several hundred dollars per visit. If you have affordable insurance that fits your budget with co-pays and coverage, you won't feel the pinch in your pocketbook.

Types

There are four main types of health insurance, explains the "Journal of the American Medical Association." Two of the most popular are HMOs, or health maintenance organizations, and PPOs -- preferred provider organizations. HMOs are offered through your employer and are affordable as long as there are several employees participating. The insurance is often restricted to one group of doctors or dental providers and hospitals. PPOs are similar except you have more options of seeing certain doctors and dentists within a network. With indemnity insurance, you decide the amount of coverage you want. It can be affordable, but it's risky if you are unable to afford a service that isn't covered. Government-funded insurance such as Medicaid or Medicare offers free or low-cost coverage and is available to people within certain income guidelines, disabilities or of a certain age.

Features

Insurance companies that do not cover certain expenses may force you to seek low-cost care outside of your insurance network. HealthCare.gov recommends that you look for care and assistance through local hospitals, health centers and dental clinics in your area. Some clinics will offer payment plans if you can't afford the cost of upfront care. Many social service organizations within hospitals and clinics will also determine what you can pay based on your income and financial situation.

Considerations

Consider that some insurance companies may have certain rules or stipulations on your coverage, especially government-backed or low-cost insurance. You may not be allowed seek emergency care without approval from your physician. You may also be denied coverage if you have a pre-existing health condition, including periodontal disease or diabetes. Visiting a dental school clinic, community action agency or free or low-cost health clinic can help fill the gap with your medical and dental services.

Prevention

Staying healthy and getting preventative care will help you better qualify for the most affordable insurance. When filling out a health or dental insurance application, many organizations will ask you personal questions about you and your family's health, current and past medical conditions, if you smoke, if you have auto or home insurance and questions about your credit. All of these may be considered before they determine to offer coverage. The healthier you are and the more responsible you are with your finances and career, the better rate you will get on your premiums.
