Wrestling matches pit to unarmed participants against each other in a physical struggle. Each contestant attempts to subdue or unbalance his opponent. A wrestler typically grapples with his opponent to bring some part of his opponent's body in contact with the playing mat. The rules for particular types of wrestling matches designate the specific body part that must contact the mat for a win.

International Wrestling

The two basic types of international wrestling matches are Greco-Roman and Freestyle matches. Wrestlers may not grasp opponents below the belt line or trip the opponent to use the legs in a wrestling move in Greco-Roman matches. Freestlyle matches permit wrestlers to grasp the legs, trip and use the opponent's legs to perform wrestling moves. A wrestler must pin his opponent or win on points during international standard wrestling matches. You successfully pin your opponent by pinning both of his shoulders to the floor mat at the same time. A judge awards points to each wrestler for each move or action performed during the match.

Sumo Wrestling

Sumo wrestling is the national sport of Japan. A sumo wrestler fights to try to push his opponent out of the ring or make any part of his opponent's body touch the ground other than the soles of his feet. Sumo matches may only last a few seconds or up to five minutes. Three- or four-minute extensions may be granted if there is no apparent winner after five minutes. Wrestlers must rematch if there is no winner after overtime extensions.

Arm Wrestling

Arm wrestlers use arm, upper body strength and technique during arm wrestling matches. The competitors stand face-to-face on either side of an arm wrestling table and pad. A referee positions the palms of the left or right hand of each contestant in a grip with the elbows bent and resting on a padded table. Each contestant grasps a peg on the table with her free hand for support. Contestants win arm wrestling matches by pinning some part the area between his opponent's wrist line and finger tips to the pad.

Strip Matches

Striptease matches are Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestling matches in which the loser or someone that accompanies the loser must strip his clothing following a loss. Variations of the striptease match include tuxedo and bridal or evening gown wrestling matches. Two men wrestle against each other wearing tuxedos in a tuxedo match and the winner is the first to successfully remove his opponent's tuxedo. Two women content against each other wearing evening or bridal gowns during gown matches and the winner is the first to successfully remove her opponent's dress.
