Joseph H. Pilates first developed his system of exercises in the 1920s. He wanted to strengthen his body and improve his health after having suffered from a sickly childhood. His unique sequence of movements are put together to develop a balanced mind and body according to Pilates Insight. Pilates became popular in the 1990s during the time when people became interested in the mind-body connection and now classes can be found in most major fitness centers and private studios.

Benefits of Pilates

According to the Pilates Method Alliance, regular pilates sessions have numerous benefits. Increased lung capacity and deep breathing that also improve circulation are the core focus of the exercises. Coordination, strength and flexibility are enhanced especially in the back and abdominal muscles. Posture and balance improves as well as joint health and bone density. Participants also experience positive body image that can affect other areas of their lives.

Mat Classes

A pilates mat class is usually advised for beginners as it is cost effective and an effective way to learn the basic principles of pilates. Classes are typically small so that the certified instructor can guide participants and help them make adjustments if needed. You may perform exercises while standing, seated or lying down to challenge different areas of your body. Individual and small group classes are also available at many studios and fitness centers.

Reformer Classes

The Pilates Reformer is one of the widely used pieces of equipment in pilates workouts. It is a spring-loaded machine that allows you to work your upper and lower body as well as your core. Classes are usually small so that the instructor can guide participants properly, but Pilates Insight advises private lessons before joining a group class so that you can learn how the pulley system and carriage work.

Tips

Before you try any pilates class, choose a comfortable environment and take classes taught by instructors who possess a specialized certification. Consider paying extra for a few private lessons or small group lessons before joining a larger class so that you are comfortable with the workout and exercise technique. Speak to your instructor about any health or medical conditions you may have so that they can advise you properly and ensure your safety. Choose a class that is appropriate to your fitness level and experience for the best results.
