Some teams and venues require you to wear hockey socks, while other players prefer to go without. If you need to wear hockey socks, opt for thin, cotton socks that don't interfere with the fit of your shin padding and stretch with you, says iSport. Socks are one of the last items of clothing to put on when you suit up for a game, so ensuring that everything else is properly in place can help you get the most secure fit with your socks.

Step 1

Dress in your foundation garments, including thermals. Put on all your lower-body gear before you put on upper-body gear, so as not to limit your range of motion while you suit up.

Step 2

Put on your shin pads by laying them over your leg with the padding rolls facing out. Strap them around your legs at the ankle and behind the knee.

Step 3

Roll your socks down so you can hold the opening wide with your hands. Place your thumbs in the opening and pull them over your foot. Hockey socks are meant to be snug, but they'll move and stretch with you. This helps keep your shin pads in place while giving you the most mobility. Stretch your hockey socks all the way up to the thigh and over the lip of your shin pad.

Step 4

Pull your hockey pants over your socks and tighten at the waist. Put on your skates and tie tightly.

Step 5

Wrap a layer of hockey tape around your socks, cinching them tighter to your shin pads, suggests the New Jersey Institute of Technology. This ensures the best fit possible, while making sure your socks stay up as you move around the ice. Keep a roll of hockey tape in your bag to have handy when you need to adhere your pads to your uniform components for optimum comfort.
