In chakra yoga, you are energizing the mind and body to heal and become more balanced in energy, says Dr. Leslie Moore of Health Mad. Your chakras allow you to automatically open up to unconditional love, empowerment, joy, increased income and better health, and it helps you with stress management for everyday living. Each person has seven chakras and they all contribute to the balance and functions of your body, mind and spirit.
Muladhara Chakra and Adrenal Glands
This is your root, or first, chakra and it is between the anus and genitals. The first chakra connects to your adrenal glands, kidneys and your spinal column. It is accountable for your flight or fight response. According to yoga teacher Dr. Rita Khanna, when this chakra is underactive, people have conditions such as constipation and body pain. However, when the chakra is overactive, individuals tend to become materialistic, greedy, obsessed with being secure and resistant to change. Concentration and meditation is needed to rectify the muladhara chakra and enhance inner stability and balance, says Khanna.
Swadhisthana Chakra, Ovaries and Testes
The second chakra is located slightly below your belly button. This chakra is related to the female ovaries and the male testes. It also focuses on your liver, kidneys and lower abdomen. It is responsible for your assimilation, procreation, lymphatic system and menstrual secretion processes, says Khanna. When this chakra is overworked, you frequently become emotional. When the second chakra is underactive, you can get diseases such as diabetes, blood cancer and other illnesses related to these glands, says Khanna. She suggests you visualize your center to provide a channel for the protection of your energy, particularly your thought-process energy.
Manipura Chakra, Spleen and Pancreas
This is your third chakra and it can be located by a one-hand span above your belly button. Related to the adrenal glands, it also connects to your digestive system, spleen, liver, pancreas and gallbladder, which manufactures and emits enzymes, acids and juices needed for your digestion and your ability to absorb proper nutrients. If this chakra is underactive, you may suffer form sluggishness or issues with your digestive system. If it is overactive, you may be bossy and possibly aggressive. Khanna suggests visualizing this chakra and meditating with the visualization. It can bring you energy, effectiveness, spontaneity and nondominating power.
Anahata Chakra and Thyms Gland
Your fourth chakra is in the center of your chest and is linked to your heart, blood, lungs and circulation system. If this chakra is not active, it can cause asthma or multiple heart issues. If it is overactive, you can possibly be suffocating people with your love with selfish intent. To diminish worry, doubts or fears and to obtain cosmic and true divine love, Khanna recommends visualizing on the center.
Visshuddhi, Visshudda and Thyroid Gland
The fifth chakra is above where your throat joins to your chest. It rules the thyroid glands, the rate at which your metabolism functions and your lungs. When this chakra in underactive, you may suffer from colds, coughs, thyroid problems and a lack of communication. If it is overworked, you tend to speak too much and in a domineering manner. Khanna says when you sit and visualize this chakra, you activate your ability to connect on a telepathic level and it enhances your extra-sensory hearing. It also eliminates your feelings of superiority or inferiority and your jealousies.
Ajna Chakra and Pituitary Gland
Your sixth chakra is located at the center of your forehead, also known as your third eye. This is the center where wisdom and intuitiveness develop, says Khanna. It is connected to your pituitary gland and the part of the brain that sends out hormones to communicate to the rest of your body and endocrine system. It also connects to your central nervous system through your hypothalamus. If this chakra is underused, you could develop negative thoughts, lack of energy and probably cause bad karma. If it is overactive, you can become disillusioned, live in a fantasy world and suffer from hallucinations. Khanna says concentration and meditation on this center can destroy all karmas from your past.
Sahasrara Chakra and Pituitary Gland
The seventh chakra is also called the crown chakra and is the whole top of your head above your hairline. Khanna says, it "is not really a chakra, but our connection to our higher selves and to the divine." This chakra is related to the pineal gland, which is a light-sensitive gland that produces hormone and melatonin. Its purpose is to help your thinking ability and intelligence. "Sahasrara chakra integrates all the chakras with their respective qualities. It is the last milestone of the evolution of human awareness," says Khanna.
