Because it's essential to scoring, shooting is one of the most important of all basketball fundamentals. As a coach, it's your responsibility to help players improve at all aspects of the game, but especially at shooting. Helping players improve their shot will help your team improve and have a better shot of winning games.

Step 1

Learn each player's individual strengths and weaknesses when it comes to shooting skills. Determine which players are best suited for shooting 3-pointers, mid-range jump shots, hook shots and the other types of basketball shots.

Step 2

Teach players proper form. Players should have their feet and bodies pointed toward the basket on jump shots, for example. Teach players to flick their wrist on shots to create backspin on the ball, which gives it a greater chance of going in or bouncing on the rim and then going in.

Step 3

Coach players individually and collectively. Teach the basics of shooting fundamentals to the team as a whole, but also work with each player to correct errors in form and execution.

Step 4

Teach players the fundamentals of shooting, but allow them to use a form that feels comfortable to them. For example, the shooting elbow should be kept tucked in toward the body on the shot, but some players may feel more comfortable and have better success allowing the elbow to point out slightly.

Step 5

Build players' confidence when it comes to shooting, since a large part of shooting is mental. Use positive words and encouragement to help players feel confident about their shot.
