Herbal remedies may be helpful in relieving vaginal dryness in certain instances; however, herb can produce side effects. Consult with your health practitioner before staring new herbal treatments.

Ginseng

The Chinese have used this ancient herb for a multitude of ailments including those symptoms produced by menopause. Ginseng may help to keep vaginal walls healthy and supple, even during and after menopause and limit vaginal dryness, itching and burning, writes Vanderbilt University. Additionally, ginseng may contribute to your feeling better by helping to soothe your moods, reduce hot flashes and overcome insomnia. You can buy it at health food stores; however, the best sources for the most potent ginseng are stores specializing in Chinese and other Asian herbs. Before using ginseng, speak to your herbalist or doctor of Oriental medicine to be sure it is what you need to relieve your symptoms.

Wild Yam

Wild yam helps to regulate hormones in menopausal women, especially progesterone. It is widely used to alleviate vaginal dryness and other peri-menopausal and menopausal symptoms, writes MedlinePlus. This herb is well indicated for use in cases of mood swings, depression and insomnia during menopause, says "The Green Pharmacy Herbal Handbook." Wild yam is available in capsules and as standardized extract. Speak with an herbalist regarding which version will be best for your needs.

Black Cohosh

Black cohosh is used to treat women's issues both during their menstrual cycle as well as during menopause. It acts like a plant-based estrogen and may be helpful in regulating hormones, according to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. Black cohosh may relieve symptoms of vaginal dryness, itching and irritation, as well as burning and pain during intercourse. This herb is available in a variety of forms including capsule, supplements and standardized extracts. Consult with your health practitioner about which type will best treat your condition.

Phytoestrogens

Phytoestrogens are plant-based estrogens used to treat symptoms of menopause, says the the UMMC. Phytoestrogens are found in certain foods and herbs like red clover, flaxseed and soy that mimic the action of the hormone estrogen. Using herbs like Red clover may help alleviate vaginal symptoms including dryness, burning, itching and irritation. Red clover is available as a loose herb for making tea, or in standardized extract and capsule form. Check at the health food store with the herbal specialist for the type best suited to your needs.
