The proper foot placement will help you to keep control of your skateboard during tricks. Skateboarders generally choose between two different skating stances. Regular-footed skaters push the skateboard forward with their right foot, the Board Crazy website explains; if you push with your left foot, you have a goofy-footed riding stance. In either stance, your opposing foot rides near the front of the board for stability and balance. Your skateboard will have two trucks fastened onto the underside; tighten the truck bolts if you have trouble balancing.

Step 1

Place the wheels of your skateboard into a sidewalk crack to prevent it from rolling forward. Examine the top of your skateboard to locate two sets of four screws each. Lower your pushing foot over the four screws at the rear.

Step 2

Align your front foot over the remaining set of screws. Allow about 1 inch of your shoes to hang off the edge of the skateboard, behind your heels. Apply pressure to your heels and toes to test the tightness of the truck bolts.

Step 3

Bend your knees to a 45-degree angle to lower your center of gravity. Hold your arms parallel to the sidewalk to improve the balance of your riding stance. Use this riding stance when learning the basic techniques of rolling and jumping.
