Many creams boast ingredients that can get rid of your cellulite, those annoying lumps on your buttocks and thighs. However, MayoClinic.com states that the majority of these products are ineffective or deliver results that are short-lived. No cellulite creams will sweep the cellulite from your body, but certain ingredients can improve the look of dimpled skin either temporarily or more permanently when you apply them over time.

Retinol

Retinol, or topical retinoids, is a form of vitamin A found in many antiaging products, including cellulite creams, notes the Mayo Clinic website. It acts as an antioxidant and helps to diminish the damage that free radicals can wreak on your skin, such as accelerating the rate at which it ages and sags. Retinol also aids in your skin's collagen production, and over time this can smooth out your skin's texture and may fill in the dimples created by cellulite, according to "Allure" magazine. Do not use retinol is you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, however, since it can heighten the risk of birth defects.

Copper Peptides

Similar to retinol, copper peptides are also found in many antiaging and anticellulite creams. According to MayoClinic.com, copper is a component of every one of your skin cells, and when applied topically, it can increase the rate at which your skin heals. This is because copper peptides promote collagen production, which can in turn improve the feel and look of your cellulite over time. This ingredient can also act as an antioxidant to ward off sun damage that can make aging skin and cellulite look worse.

Caffeine

If you want to temporarily improve the look of your cellulite, a caffeine-based cream may be a good choice. When applied topically, caffeine constricts the surface of your skin. "Allure" magazine states that in cellulite creams, this ingredient tightens your skin upon application, making lumps look less noticeable. However, the improved appearance lasts only a few hours, and you need to apply more throughout the day to maintain the tightened effect.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is an antioxidant, and when you apply a cream that contains it, it can improve the look of your skin, says DermNet NZ. This vitamin helps prevent sun damage, but it also lessens wrinkles and promotes the formation of new collagen, thereby lessening the appearance of cellulite. However, if you are already consuming vitamin C supplements or are taking any other vitamins, ask a doctor before you begin using a cream with this ingredient.
