With nearly two-thirds of American adults either overweight or obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a plethora of over-the-counter weight-loss supplements are available which promote weight loss. Fucothin is one such product that contains a propriety blend of natural ingredients formulated to boost metabolism and burn fat. It is important to consult a physician before using over-the-counter dietary supplements.
Brown Seaweed Fucoxanthin Concentrate
Brown seaweed contains the active ingredient fucoxanthin. It is a carotenoid that gives brown seaweed its color and participates in photosynthesis or the conversion of light into energy. Along with promoting weight loss, fucoxanthin contains many other health benefits, such as antioxidant properties as well as cancer-fighting and anti-inflammatory effects. In animal studies, fucoxanthin has been shown to act directly and indirectly to reduce adipose or fat tissue, according to an article in the July 2006 issue of the "International Journal of Molecular Medicine." In humans, when combined with pomegranate seed oil, fucoxanthin shows anti-obesity properties which include reductions in body weight, fat and liver fat, according to a study in the January 2010 issue of "Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism."
Pomegranate Seed Oil
The seed oil of pomegranate fruits in Fucothin have been standardized to punicic acid or conjugated linolenic acid, according to the website Fucothin.com. Conjugated linolenic acid or CLA has anti-obesity effects as well as cancer, high cholesterol and high blood pressure fighting properties. The makers of Fucothin report that CLA and fucoxanthin work together to promote thermogenesis, or heat production, which helps burn calories.
Other Ingredients
Additional ingredients in Fucothin include gelatin, glycerin, palm oil, purified water and iodine. Fucothin is available as capsule form as softgels and these ingredients are necessary to provide structural integrity to the capsules as well as increase the shelf-life and keep the ingredients from sticking together. Iodine is not added, but is naturally occurring as part of another ingredient.
