In 2001 the U.S. Surgeon General issued a call to action to address the problem of obesity. The result was the 10,000 Steps A Day initiative, urging people to walk as many steps as possible to improve their health.
Distance
Based upon the average length of a walking stride, 10,000 steps is approximately 5 miles. The number of calories burned depends on variables such as your weight and how fast you are walking.
Effects
A 150-lb. person walking at a moderate pace of 3 mph burns 374 calories while walking 10,000 steps. If the same person increases the pace to 4 mph, he burns 425 calories covering the same distance.
Considerations
Running your 10,000 steps may be an effective alternative to walking. A 150-lb. person jogging a 10-minute mile completes 10,000 steps in 4.25 miles and burns approximately 482 calories.
