Herbal Treatments for Dental Abscesses

A dental or tooth abscess is the accumulation of pus in the center of the tooth that may occur as a complication of tooth decay or from injury to the tooth. The infection starts at the center of the tooth and spreads to the root of the tooth and to the bones supporting it. Severe toothache along with breath odor, fever, and swollen neck glands are the main symptoms of dental abscess. Antibiotics and pain medications may be prescribed to treat the condition. Certain herbs may help to treat and manage the symptoms naturally, but should be used only for temporary relief, not instead of a dentist's care.

Onion

Home Remedies recommends chewing a piece of raw onion for three minutes to kill pathogenic bacteria in the mouth and thereby, prevent tooth decay and toothache. Placing a slice of onion over the infected area in the mouth may also provide relief from tooth pain, and including onion in your diet everyday may be beneficial to control dental infections.

Cloves

Cloves are dried flower buds of a tree called Eugenia aromaticum, which has anti-bacterial properties and may help treat and control infections. Clove oil, according to Natural -- Home Remedies.org, may help tot provide relief from toothache and reduce infection. Gargling with a solution prepared by boiling 3 cloves and a small piece of ginger can help relieve tooth pain. A paste consisting of clove powder and olive oil may provide temporary relief from tooth pain when applied to the infected area. Cloves are generally safe to use and no side effects have been reported. However, it is best to talk to a doctor before taking clove for medicinal purposes.

Asafoetida

Asafoetida is a flavoring agent used in Asian and Indian cuisine. Slightly warm a mixture of lime juice and asafoetida powder to help relieve tooth pain when applied to the site of infection. No adverse reactions for asafoetida have been reported. Drugs.com, however, states that asafoetida may interact with certain anticoagulant drugs and hence, should not be used without consulting a physician.

Wheat Grass

Wheat grass juice is a rich source of vitamins, minerals and amino acids and as per Juicing for Health.com, wheat grass juice gargle may help prevent tooth decay and tooth pain. It may also help to remove bad breath. Wheat grass may occasionally cause nausea, constipation and loss of appetite. It is best to talk to a health care professional before taking large quantities of wheat grass juice.

Bayberry

A paste of bark of bayberry or Myrica Cerifera tree and vinegar is applied on the site of the abscess to provide relief from the pain. Bayberry, according to Drugs.com, can cause nausea and upset stomach. Bayberry pollen can also lead to allergic reactions. A physician should always be consulted before taking bayberry.
