Prostatitis is a disease that affects the male prostate causing painful urination and abdominal pain as well as urinary urgency. According to MayoClinic.com, prostatitis also affects sexual performance significantly. Exercise can help strengthen your abdominal muscles and ease symptoms, although prostatitis sufferers still have to be careful when exercising as some movements can worsen the condition.

Types of Prostatitis

Prostatitis can be classified into two subgroups: chronic and acute. These two types define not only the duration of symptoms but also the reason for onset. According to Mensglands.com, acute prostatitis is commonly caused by bacterial infection, causing urinary tract infection. This type of prostatitis requires treatment with antibiotics to kill invading bacteria. Chronic prostatitis is a form that requires long-term treatment with pain medication and anti-inflammatories as well as exercise to lessen symptoms.

Safe Exercise

Abdominal exercise with prostatitis is a tricky part of managing your condition. Yoga and Pilates are ideal for strengthening your core abdominal muscles without putting strain on your prostate, according to Mensglands.com. These exercises target core abdominal muscles responsible for upper body strength. Such exercises help strengthen the pelvic floor more than do standard Kegel exercises.

Dangerous Exercise

Although abdominal strengthening is ideal for treating prostatitis, there are exercise to steer clear of. According to MayoClinic.com, cycling is one such exercise. Cycling causes additional pressure on your prostate, worsening symptoms by restricting movement. Weight lifting is another exercise that adds pressure to your prostate, and should be avoided. Additional weight worsens swelling and pressure from prostatitis.

Considerations

Prostatitis left untreated can cause infertility issues, painful ejaculation and increased risk of infection. It is important to visit your doctor regularly to ensure proper treatment and prostate health. Seek emergency attention if you experience bleeding when urinating, extreme pain and pressure or inability to hold urine. Follow your doctor's instruction for exercising and taking medication.
