Lymphocytic colitis is the inflammation of the colon that occurs when lymphocytes, which are types of white blood cells, infiltrate the lining of the colon, according to John Hopkins Medicine. The accumulation of lymphocytes on the lining of the colon results in persistent, watery diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea and weight loss. Patients with lymphocytic colitis should eat certain foods in order to allow the colon to heal.
Soft Foods
Patients with lymphocytic colitis should consume soft, low-fiber foods in order to facilitate the healing of the colon, according to MayoClinic.com. High-fiber foods should be avoided because they cause increased diarrhea, gas, bloating and abdominal pain. High-fiber foods may be added slowly to the diet once symptoms of lymphocytic colitis improve. Examples of soft low-fiber foods that are suitable for patients with lymphocytic colitis include mashed potatoes, applesauce, rice and bananas. Examples of high-fiber foods to be avoided include legumes, beans, oatmeal, bran, millet and barley.
Spicy and Fatty Foods
Patients with lymphocytic colitis should avoid spicy and fried foods because they cause further irritation to the gastrointestinal tract, according to MayoClinic. Fatty foods could also worsen diarrhea. Examples of fatty foods to be avoided include steak, fries, doughnuts, bacon, hot dogs, sausages, creamy soups, gravies, whole milk, ice cream, butter and margarine.
Fluids
Patients with lymphocytic colitis should increase intake of fluids containing added electrolytes in order to replace sodium, potassium and other minerals lost due to chronic water diarrhea, according to Mayo Clinic. Examples of fluids that maybe beneficial to patients include Gatorade, broth and fruit juice. Patients should avoid alcohol and caffeine products. Caffeine causes stimulation of the colon and may worsen diarrhea.
