Stomach ulcers, also known as peptic ulcers, are sores that form the lining of the stomach and duodenum due to destruction of mucosal lining of the stomach by stomach acid, according to MayoClinic.com. Infection with Helicobacter pylori bacterium plays a key role in the development of ulcers. Due to the symptoms of stomach ulcers, which can include nausea, heartburn and vomiting, some patients are unable to tolerate certain foods.
Soft and Easy to Digest Foods
Patients with active ulcers should consume soft and easy-to-digest foods that do not cause further irritation to the sores in the stomach and duodenum, according to the American College of Gastroenterology. Soft foods prevent the over production of stomach acid that can further burn open sores. Foods like mashed potatoes, mashed squash and fat-free vegetables soups are easily digested, thereby, reducing the exposure of ulcers to stomach acid.
Protein-Rich Foods
Patients with ulcers should consume low fat protein-rich foods to facilitate the healing of ulcers. Protein helps repair damaged body tissues. Protein from low-fat sources is suitable for patients with ulcers because fatty protein foods such as whole milk, steak, bacon and hot dogs cause increased production of stomach acid, which further irritates sores on the lining of the stomach. Low-fat protein foods suitable for patients with ulcers include low-fat milk, lean meats, fish, skinned poultry, soy products, beans and legumes.
Fruits and Vegetables
Fruits and vegetables contain flavonoids, which are antioxidants that help prevent ulcers by suppressing the growth of Helicobacter pylori bacterium. Fruits and vegetables also contain vitamins that help heal ulcers. Patients should only consume low-acidic fruits such as melons, bananas, apples, berries and pears. High acidic fruits to avoid include pineapples, oranges and grapefruits. Examples of vegetables that help heal ulcers include spinach, kale, cabbage, broccoli and mustard greens. These vegetables contain vitamin K, which helps blood clot and aids in the healing of open sores in the body.
