History
In 1972, Nike developed a reputation as a major player in the athletic shoe industry when four of the top seven runners wore Nike's "Moon" shoe at the U.S. Track and Field Olympic trials. Nearly 30 years later, the company introduced Nike Shox cushioning technology at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia, setting a new precedent for comfort and performance.
Features
Nike product lines include specially tailored shoe designs for men, women and children, and sport-specific shoes for baseball, basketball, football, golf, running, soccer, tennis, training and walking. NIKEiD models allow customers to customize shoe color, foundation, base, collar, laces, forefoot, heel and sole. Nike also sells special edition collections such as the iconic Air Jordan line.
Technology
Nike performance shoes feature the company's unique cushioning system. Nike Air, Nike Max Air, Nike Zoom Air, Nike Shox and Nike Free provide different levels of shock absorbency to address different comfort and support needs. In 2006, Nike partnered with Apple to combine shoe technology and iPods in the Nike+ line. Nike+ athletic shoes house a special receiver that communicates with an iPod nano for runners to access time, distance, calories and pace.
