What Is a Winsor Pilates Circle?

Pilates is an exercise system designed to help to strengthen the muscles of the hips, back and abdominals. Originally developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century, Pilates classes are offered by gyms across the country and on DVDs. One of the best known Pilates instructors and studio owners is Mari Winsor. She offers an interpretation of Pilates exercise in her two studios and through a line of DVDs, books and props. One of these props is the Winsor Pilates Circle.

Description

Mari Winsor Pilates is based on a "dynamic sequencing technique" --- streaming movements together in an easy-to-follow pattern that her program claims to yield maximum results. She uses classic Pilates moves on the mat, and many of her workouts require no extra equipment. The Winsor Pilates Circle is Mari Winsor's version of the apparatus, first developed by Joseph Pilates, sometimes called the Magic Circle. Mari Winsor offers several DVD workouts utlizing this 13-inch circle -- a springy ring that you can hold in your hands or between your legs during many exercises.

Benefits

The Winsor Pilates Circle adds variety and additional challenge to classic mat-based classes. It helps to build strength when squeezed between the hands or the legs. It also helps to ensure proper form and technique during classic exercises. The Winsor Pilates Circle is portable and appropriate for most Pilates practitioners.

Use

Mari Winsor uses her Pilates Circle to help participants build upper body strength as well as enhance core strength. Examples of ways to use the ring are to squeeze the Pilates Circle between your thighs when performing roll ups or the double straight leg stretch. You may also grasp the ring between your hands when doing a full-roll up to ensure control and proper hand placement.

Considerations

Before adding props to a Pilates workout, master the basic mat Pilates moves. Consider seeking out a class led by a certified Pilates instructor at a fitness center or gym to ensure you have proper form. Although Pilates is a gentle-paced exercise program, injury is possible.

Misconceptions

Pilates, even with the Winsor Pilates circle, will not cause weight loss. Use Pilates as one component in a fitness program that includes regular cardiovascular activity to burn calories and encourage heart health. In addition, follow a healthy, calorie-controlled diet to reach a healthy weight.
