A baseball catcher wears quite a lot of protective equipment while behind the plate. Standard catcher's gear consists of a helmet and mask or one-piece hockey style mask, chest protector and shin pads. Swinging bats and the potential for foul balls requires catcher's equipment to fit properly so all parts of the body are protected.
Step 1
Run a tape measure from the top of your sternum to your belt buckle or waistline and record the measurement. This is the length of chest protector you will need for a proper fit.
Step 2
Measure from the middle of your kneecap all the way to the bottom of your shin to determine the size of the shin guards you'll need.
Step 3
Wrap a tape measure around your head just on top of your ears and record the measurement. Consult a helmet fitting guide for the proper size to try. Sizes may differ from the traditional helmet and mask to the more modern hockey goalie style. You can also get your size from a fitted cap.
Step 4
Try your equipment on to ensure it feels comfortable and isn't too bulky or awkward for your body. Make a couple of throws with the chest protector on if possible so you will know if it is going to hinder your throwing capability.
